Once your birth has been registered in Mexico, you’ve established something important: your Mexican civil identity.

But your acta de nacimiento is only the beginning.

Just as you’ve accumulated documents throughout your life in the United States—a birth certificate, Social Security number, identification and passport—Mexico has its own set of documents that establish different parts of your identity.

For a Mexican American building a life in two countries, there are four documents worth knowing.

1. Mexican Birth Certificate — Acta de Nacimiento

Your Mexican birth certificate is the foundation. It shows that your birth has been registered with Mexico’s Civil Registry and creates the civil record from which many other documents flow.

For Become Mexican clients, this is the document at the center of the registration process.

2. CURP

CURP stands for Clave Única de Registro de Población. It is a unique population-registration number used throughout Mexican administrative life.

You will encounter it in government records, education, employment, healthcare and many other processes.

3. Mexican Passport

A Mexican passport is a separate application handled through Mexico’s Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores.

It is both an international travel document and an important form of Mexican identification and proof of nationality.

And let’s be honest: having two passports is pretty cool.

4. INE

The INE credential is Mexico’s voter identification card and one of the country’s most commonly used forms of identification.

Eligible Mexican citizens age 18 and older can apply, and Mexicans living in the United States can use Mexico’s consular network for the process.

A Useful Way to Think About the Documents

The systems are not exact legal equivalents, but the comparison can make the roles easier to understand:

  • U.S. Birth Certificate → Mexican Acta de Nacimiento
  • Social Security Number → CURP
  • U.S. Passport → Mexican Passport
  • State ID / Driver’s License → INE

Start With the Foundation

You do not need to obtain every Mexican document at once.

For most people registering a U.S. birth in Mexico, the first goal is the Mexican birth certificate and CURP. Passport and INE can come next depending on what you plan to do.

You now have the documents to begin navigating Mexico as a Mexican.
