Mexican citizenship through a Mexican parent can feel complicated, especially when you’re dealing with documents from two countries.
Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often.
Common questions about whether you or your family may be eligible for Mexican citizenship.
If you were born outside Mexico to a Mexican mother or father, you may be entitled to Mexican citizenship by birth. We review your family circumstances and documents to help determine what will be needed to complete your registration in Mexico.
Not necessarily. Eligibility can depend on how your parent obtained Mexican citizenship and the circumstances of your birth. We can review your particular situation before you begin.
Yes. Your parent does not need to be living for you to establish your Mexican citizenship through them. We can help determine which documents are needed to establish your relationship to your Mexican parent and complete the registration process.
Yes. There is no requirement that you complete the process as a child simply because your claim to Mexican citizenship comes through a parent.
Potentially, yes. Once your own Mexican citizenship is properly documented, your children may also have a path to recognition as Mexican citizens depending on their circumstances.
Questions about the documents you need and how to obtain them.
The exact documents depend on your case, but generally the process begins with your U.S. birth certificate and documentation establishing your Mexican parent’s identity and citizenship. After your eligibility review, we’ll tell you exactly what is required for your case.
In many cases, yes. We will tell you whether an apostille is required and can help coordinate the document process when needed.
We may be able to help obtain a Mexican birth certificate that is already available in the national digital registry. If the record is older or has not been digitized, we can also assist with a local record search and digitization.
Don’t assume that a difference automatically prevents you from becoming Mexican. Name discrepancies are common in U.S.–Mexico families. We review your documents first and identify issues that may need to be addressed before registration.
Questions about how it works, timelines, and what to expect.
For many cases, our team can handle the registration process in Mexico without requiring you to travel there. We’ll let you know if your particular circumstances require anything different.
Most cases are completed in approximately 6–8 weeks after we receive the required documents. Timing can vary depending on the documents involved and processing in Mexico.
We complete the registration through the Mexican Civil Registry. Once successfully registered, your Mexican birth record can be entered into Mexico’s national digital civil registry system.
You receive your Mexican birth certificate and CURP, along with digital copies of your completed documents. We can also provide guidance on the next steps for obtaining your Mexican passport.
Generally, no. Mexico and the United States both permit dual nationality in circumstances applicable to many Mexican Americans. Holding Mexican nationality does not ordinarily require a U.S. citizen to give up U.S. citizenship.
Questions about our service, how to get started, and what makes us different.
No. Become Mexican is a private document preparation and concierge service. We are not a law firm and do not provide legal advice. Government authorities make all final determinations regarding citizenship and registration.
Instead of giving you a checklist and leaving you to navigate the process yourself, we help organize and prepare your documents and coordinate the registration process in Mexico. You have one team helping you from the initial review through completion.
Start with an eligibility review. We’ll learn about your family history, review what documents you already have, and explain what will be needed for your particular case.
That’s exactly what the eligibility review is for. You don’t need to figure everything out before contacting us.
